Key words: story telling, designing for space, empathy and interactions in public spaces

When we talk about designing a narrative it's not just the story also about to whom and where it is told. We can experience many new technical medium of communication in the space around us. The purpose of these communications is to engage with the audience who frequently visit the space. It is important for us to understand the kind of user who are present around the design so that it is received in the best way possible.
When we use a medium for communication there are two aspects that we should always keep in mind the information we tell and how accurately it is perceived by the audience. In this module we were given an assignment to design a visual narrative for visitor in a shopping mall using 3 different medium that is augmented reality, virtual reality and film.
With the example of this assignment I would like to bring light upon my recent learning on a some guidelines that can be used to design for a persona or a target audience in a given space.
Brief: every project starts with a brief basically the task that we won't be able to achieve at the end of the project it could ba topic given by and instructor aurat could also be a topic given by some other organisation to the design team it can also be something which is self initiative
User: In the next step we need to observe and identify the kind of users we are designing for.Where they come from and where will they after. What would the best possible way to grab their attention. In an open space such as the shopping mall several people visit every day. They come visit stores and restaurants. Yet they hardly interact with each other. Or have an emotional connect with their fellow visitors in the space. This of the harsh side effects of the modern lifestyle. Individuals matter more than Communities.
A mall is a place where people come to shop. Why will they stop and look at something that we create in the space. They are preoccupied with some other task, do they have enough time to stop and look at our designs, if not how much attention span can we expect from the users. Will they remember the information that we shared after leaving the space will they be hooked enough.
Space: the space and users are linked together in a given space we can identify the type of user that visit the space. Example, if it is a school we will have more children. The space also defines the movement of the users and what elements are grabbing their attention. Like when a person is on the escalator they are not doing anything, there is a higher chance of grabbing their attention in this moment. A shopping mall is a huge space and users have to walk a lot, therefore they have a lot of seating area this is another point where we can intervene with our design the overall journey of the user depends on what task they have to achieve in the space and the type of space what we need to study is what are the spaces in this journey where we can hold their attention and convey our ideas.
Another important aspect of space is that when people come to visit the space they have a certain mood and mind set.
Analysis: by gathering the data from the above topics we get to analyse pain - points, the constraint in space related to the types of users and the space and secondly what are the moment and places in the spaced where we can convey our ideas and stories the best
Following are the three ideas which we pitched in for the assignment
When people are tired of shopping and want to take rest they can try out the AR app for navigating through the social media pages of the non living things around them.
Following are the three ideas which we pitched in for the assignment
1. When people are tired of shopping and want to take rest they can try out the AR app for navigating through the social media pages of the non living things around them. Know more about the regular objects around the mall will make people aware of their surrounding and a way of empathizing with the space.
2. An AR app in the middle of the seating area where multiple people can can login and make a collective 3D art piece, When the user visit the app the can see what people crated before them they can then add their own touch to the art work.
This is an attempt to make strangers interact with each other in space without intruding their comfort zone. In a hope that people will connect with each other on a minor level and feel more comfortable in the space.
